Был образован в 1993 г. и является правопреемником Международного консультативного комитета по радиосвязи (МККР) Сектор радиосвязи МСЭ (МСЭ-R) играет важнейшую роль в глобальном управлении использованием радиочастотного спектра и орбит спутников ограниченных природных ресурсов, спрос на которые постоянно растет со стороны большого и все возрастающего числа служб, таких как фиксированная, подвижная, радиовещательная и любительская службы, служба космических исследований, служба электросвязи в чрезвычайных ситуациях, метеорологическая служба, системы глобального определения местоположения, служба мониторинга состояния окружающей среды и службы связи, которые обеспечивают безопасность человеческой жизни на земле, на море и в воздухе.
